Our Saturday Dance & MT Programme classes are all about the joy of dance and performance.
These classes cover 3 core dance genres: Ballet, Jazz and Tap, and we also learn Singing for Musical Theatre. Our ethos is about learning proper technique in a safe, welcoming and encouraging environment, all while making friends and building a community of talented, good humans who love what they do and support each other in doing it!
From the core styles as our springboard, we explore related genres – including commercial and street dance, lyrical, contemporary and cheer pom. Choreography sessions promote the creative and collaborative potential of the students.
Dance & MT students have the option of taking accredited exams in the core styles that award technical development and performance quality, which ultimately lead to professional qualification.
Class proficiency awards allow everyone to track and celebrate their achievements. Regular performances give our stars an outlet to shine.

We want our students to love coming to classes, experiencing the joy and energy of moving to music with their friends in a safe, fun and non-judgemental environment. The school is non-competitive. Parents don't come in with the kids to dance classes, this is their dance space!
This is our very favourite thing about dancing - working with the music to make a choreography that is dynamic and exciting.
There is nothing like the feeling you get when you're dancing to great music!
We explicitly teach rhythm for dance in each class, and we show our dancers how to understand phrasing, harmonic inflection and dynamic contrast through their Musical Theatre work where they learn repertoire and vocal technique.
Rhythm Academy offers qualified instruction in a range of dance styles, even beyond the core 3. Every class will cover ballet, tap and jazz as a minimum, with regular sessions from a specialised professional vocal teacher covering voice care, singing technique, ensemble and solo singing, and acting through song.
This develops confident, stylish performers with a diverse movement vocabulary and solid technical skill, plus singing and drama skills to build confidence, showmanship and musicality in every student.
Professional, experienced, qualified and fully insured, Rhythm Academy looks after student wellbeing above all else.
All of our students do class proficiency award assessments as standard (but they're nothing like exams, really!)
Should a student wish to sit external exams these can be offered through the BATD however it is not mandatory for anybody. Our Saturday sessions work towards merit and medal tests that award standards for good technique and performance quality. Full ballet and jazz grade examinations are only possible if you attend the grade classes, which run on Tuesday evenings.
Please note exams come at an extra cost set by the exam board and will require rigorous uniform and presentation requirements. If you need help with this, get in touch as we are committed to doing what we can to help our community access the performing arts in whatever way we are able.
Rhythm Academy staff have taught many dancers, actors and singers over the years in various styles, helping students secure places on Associate and Junior Programmes, Prestigious Theatre Schools, and HNC/HND dance college courses, and put many school students through National 5 and Higher Dance courses.
Performance art is meant to be enjoyed by an audience, and we aim to put on a show to share our Dance and Musical Theatre work with family and friends.
We also like to invite families and friends to watch open classes and floor shows to see how well students are progressing in their studies. Follow our social media to stay up to date with planned dates and important announcements regarding our Dance & MT Programme.
The "foundation" of dance technique - we teach positions of the feet, port-de-bras, barre work, allegro, adage and enchainements to develop grace, strength and placement which primes our dancers for strong performance in all the other styles.
A fun, loud, rhythmic style where your feet become your musical instrument. We show our dancers how to articulate their feet to create interesting patterns of sounds! A great way to learn rhythm and musicality from the start.
The stylish, elegant and dramatic style which dominates the world of dance from West End stages to "Dance Moms" to the Moulin Rouge! This is a highly skilled mix of technique, strength and style and can be smooth and lyrical or sharp and sassy. It gives dancers a good basis to explore more contemporary and modern styles.
A beautiful style combining elements of ballet, jazz and contemporary which builds strong and flexible dancers, using contraction, release, extension and dimensions to create gorgeous body lines and artistic patterns of choreography.
A branch of Concert Dance that evolved in the 20th century. Expressive, athletic movement with contraction and release at its core. Dancers learn to use momentum, breath, and counterbalance to propel themselves through the space in interesting ways. Lots of floorwork and flickers of ballet, physical theatre and even martial art can be recognised in this style.
Freestyle is so much fun. This style continually changes with whatever's popular. Freestyle can incorporate anything from hip-hop steps to cheerleading formations. Latin style footwork, body lines, and pirouettes you'd see in jazz or ballet can feature to make a dance style that constantly evolves and is a lot of fun.
Throughout dance and singing activities we use correct terminology for describing music - stage performers should be able to communicate with musicians, so we believe that the language should be understandable to them!
Through the songs we learn, we explain to students why songs make them feel a certain way. Tonality, phrasing, chromaticism... as we experience these feelings we explore how the composer made that possible.
We teach students to use their bodies as their instrument to dance and we teach them how to sing too. A child's voice is their first expressive tool from their first cry, we help them develop that through teaching breath control, vocal health, tone and projection. Classes learn a wide repertoire of songs.
Learning how to use your body and not words to express ideas, feelings and themes. We use movement techniques like mime, gesture, gait and posture to express a range of cultural or emotional ideas. This is a big part of drama teaching but we also see it help dancers become so much more dynamic in their performance and choreographic work.
Drama games help us to break the ice and become confident. We can use physical warm-ups, foster good group dynamics and encourage creativity and adaptability. These activities take a lot of forms, including traditional games, as well as exercises in improvisation, dialogue, observation and imagination... The weans love them!
Please reach us through the contact form if your question isn't answered.
To enhance expression and musicality, classes learn stagecraft, how to sing and how to act; all of this gives them more tools for expressive performance and trains them to work with different theatrical disciplines from a place of shared understanding.
This is incorporated into their dance class in a fun and engaging way that complements their dance work.
Classes use drama games to explore physical theatre and facial expression, through character work they develop empathy and awareness, and improvisation builds confidence, social skills and creative problem-solving.
Students learn songs with choreography to understand musical phrasing, tonality, harmonic movement and dynamics in a fun, physical way.
Rhythmic work is taught explicitly - most obviously through tap dance, as the feet become a musical instrument themselves, but rhythm exists in all dance styles so students learn how to use tempo, accent and timing in their dancing which we believe makes for a better performer all round. Musical Theatre exams can be taken from both the BATD and LCME.
The classes are structured in such a way that all styles are covered suitable to the age and stage of the dancers in the class. This ensures a broad and general dance experience underpinned by safe, proper technical training and appropriate body conditioning to support their progress.
Studying more than one style builds versatility, fitness and adaptability. In today's performance industry (like so many others!) versatility is crucial.
We also believe that, similar to our music programme, being experienced in a variety of styles means we can enjoy our favourites and learn to appreciate what else there is too. It means students cultivate a broad vocabulary of movement and skill that builds confidence, competence and athleticism.
Yes, but we are not a ballet school, so it is not our sole focus. Our dance teachers all hold Ballet teaching diplomas, and ballet forms the core of our technical training. Pupils will have a chance to dance en pointe as they progress and they learn the French terminology.
I can make recommendations for excellent ballet schools if you are wishing that level of intensive training in ballet specifically for your child. In depth grade level classes are available for Ballet, which we encourage for our upper primary students and beyond.
Ballet is a brilliant foundation to build strength, flexibility, grace, body awareness, musicality and placement, plus it is excellent for training good posture and presence in a performer.
That's why it features in every class of ours!
In the beginning, you wear age-appropriate comfortable stretchy clothes (nothing too loose though as it gets in the way).
By lesson 4 we would expect all dancers to attend in uniform, and have the appropriate shoes (tap and soft shoes) so they can safely proceed.*** Uniform lists will be distributed at class and can either be ordered through the school or purchased directly from retailers.
***Please note, we're not "uniform daft" and no child will be excluded on the basis of not wearing exact uniform, but dance is a physical pursuit that carries a risk of injury and APPROPRIATE clothing and footwear is a matter of being responsible about child safety.
Movement is uninhibited and the alignment of muscles and joints can be seen through the fabric. This is important to avoid injury and correct mistakes as they arise. Nobody should be dancing in socks only - that's a slip hazard and bare feet, trainers or appropriate dance shoes should be worn at all times.
Yes, absolutely. All are welcome! We have both boys and girls enrolled in all our activities at Rhythm Academy.
While we encourage all students to participate in our performances, it's not something that suits every single person - or maybe they don't feel ready yet but would like the option in subsequent years. That's completely alright.
Our way of teaching and learning includes showing students what supporting each other really is, so we find most children want actively to be involved however they can be.
We host open-class showcases where family members are invited in to see what the students have been working on, and that's a great opportunity to build the confidence to perform to a bigger arena in the future. We try to keep our productions local and convenient, baring in mind what can be reasonably expected of young children and their families!
We accept Dance and MT programme students from 3 years old, and ask that they are toilet trained. As we are covering dance, drama and song in our classes there is so much fun to be had for the little ones. So long as they can walk and talk well and be away from their parents for the duration of the class, we are delighted to have them. These are drop-off classes.
£6.33 per class. This includes class for kids platform fees, warm-up, conditioning, technique and artistic work with activities appropriate to each age group, and the input from our vocal trainer.
Classes are payable per half-term (approx 5 or 6 weeks) payable on the first class of the block. Classes are bookable through ClassforKids at our booking page. Don't worry, if you're already in the class you'll get a text when it's payment time.
Classes missed cannot be refunded.
Remember your child's dance class involves paying for fully trained staff who must pay professional subscriptions (and all undertaking continuous professional development), comprehensive insurances, phonographic licensing to use music legally, hall hire and equipment costs.
No. The Music Programme is not a Musical Theatre programme. There will be some natural crossover, but it won't be the same.
Musicianship activities like sight-singing, aural skills, music theory and certain styles will be covered in the Music Programme that are not covered here.
This programme covers theatrical dance, performance and singing with staging and choreography.
Yes, they will still be taught vocal technique, breath control and voice care, but beyond that, the big difference is in the performance context and the repertoire.
